Hans J. Wegner designed the CH24 Y chair for Carl Hansen & Søn in 1949. The Y-chair has been produced continuously since 1950, which tells a lot about its timeless design, impressive durability and sustained popularity.
The iconic CH24 Y chair, in the English Wishbone Chair, is a classically beautiful and light sculptural dining chair available in many different variants. The backrest is carefully bent by means of steam, which gives freedom of movement and excellent comfort. In terms of craftsmanship, the Y-chair is a small masterpiece, since more than 100 parts of the fabrication of the chair are genuine crafts. The seat is braided in the hand by 120 meter paper cord, which has a durability of up to 50 years.
Hans J. Wegner was educated as a carpenter in 1931 and studied at the School of Arts and Crafts in Copenhagen from 1936-1938. In the 1940-1943 he drew the furniture for eg. Arne Jacobsen’s town hall in Aarhus. Wegner worked as an independent architect and was employed as a teacher at the Danish School of Arts and Crafts’s Furniture School.
